Shamus Coghlan has over two decades of combined classical university studies, performing, production, high-end audio equipment review and articling, and sought after mastering experience.  His infinite and raw but techno-cally beautiful approach to layering 3-decks of rhythm upon rhythm upon rhythm is illustrated in the way he orchestrates each concert and loses his listeners somewhere between the beats.

Shamus' intimate romance with music ignited while studying guitar as a youngster; but it was traditional Ukrainian dance classes, easily transitioning to Break Dancing, that sparked an affection for Hip-Hop.  Almost immediately began his tutorial of cutting and scratching, and cutting and scratching.  As Rave began to spread its contagion and taint the innocent lives of thousands of kids full of promise, the seductive sounds of Detroit Techno soon embedded themselves into his subconscious.  He studied classical music at Lakehead University in Thunder Bay, Ontario, with a focus on Percussion, but never looked back.  Slotted in many of the enormous warehouse parties Toronto became infamous for, it wasn’t long before he made the city home in 1993.

Firm to his beliefs, Coghlan has never strayed from the path of innovative production and uncompromising manufacturing despite all costs.  His music is a vivid portrait; capturing a blend of unique creativity, intricate composition and harsh determination and his recent production accomplishments are a testament to his skill.

In 2005, marking his first release, Coghlan shared production credit of the successful track ‘Crushing’ on the 12” EP ‘Beyond’ (Missing Unit).  Receiving amazing reviews, gaining international rotation in concert and on radio the track was licensed to, and slotted in the prestigious 16th listing on the 25th Carl Craig installment of the revered Fabric compilation.

tHeme:416 (Vergel Evans, 2006), an extremely well received techno mix showcasing unsigned and promising Toronto, Canada artists, featured two tracks among “Crushing” by Coghlan: “Between D Linez” and “Gemini XXX” (Missing Unit).  The mix gained impressive global exposure and donated credibility to the city’s developing sound gradually gaining attention south of the border.

Shamus’ obsession with the science of sound is at the forefront of his character and reflects in his production.  His pristine ear and wealth of audio knowledge caught the attention of Canada HiFi, a high-end national audio magazine of which he now writes regular product review columns.  Shamus has become a recognized authority on sound.  Show up at his doorstep with a case of Becks, he’ll invite you in, show you his custom braided speaker cables and run your ear off about tube amps.

S Coghlan

*quote* … there were these black boxes with names like JBL and Cerwin on them? … and some guy named Shamus took these 12" round plates from a box and placed them randomly on 3 of these silver rotating machines … the blue box in the middle his hands and fingers were all over, was the mixer and he was in the zone … I don’t know … ?  I can only recall that there were just waves and waves of sound cutting right into you, right through you … every sound had its own character … there were just these random flowing personalities being revealed in each of them ... then merged into another sound, then another new sound comes through ... really tripnotic ... and for some reason we were all able to see Shamus come alive as he moved and tweaked each button on the machines, like it was all in the palm of his hands ... pheeew ... wtf?  I felt possessed and emotions on many tangents ... I turned around and asked my friend, he said this was "un-apologetic techno at its best" ... *end-quote*

Discouraged in a maze of industry politics, deals gone sour, and satisfied with no less than total control, Shamus Coghlan launched (807) Recordings in late 2006 as the ultimate creative outlet to showcase his signature artisan sound.  Committed to uncompromising quality, production, and manufacturing, (807) spares nothing and sets to redefine audio standards by pushing the boundaries.

(807)'s quest for quality lead to industry partnerships with famed Mastering Engineer Nilesh Patel from the Exchange Studio in London, England and Pallas GmbH in Diepholz, Germany; a vinyl pressing plant globally reputable for immaculate handling and precision cleaning.

“Further”, our first release, is pressed on 180-gram audiophile vinyl.  The result is a spacious, clean, organic and dynamic sound any listener, studio professional or club enthusiast, can easily identify and appreciate.

In the early ‘90’s Toronto’s rave scene was, without exaggeration, comparable to that of the UK’s.  Massive parties had become the night landscape of a city whose youth found freedom from rigid social parameters within the voice of music.  Greedy promoters coupled with conservative authorities helped to disband this lucrative and growing enterprise; making way for overpriced condominiums and corporate office space in place of warehouses and nightclubs.  Today, there exists only fading echoes of what was and artists, those who have persevered, console themselves through the music they create.  Shamus’ music is a vivid portrait of sacrifice, determination, passion and ambition.

In Berlin, techno music is the union of religion and technology.  Coghlan’s new release was inspired by his first visit to the city and, of his more memorable experiences, witnessing the closing of Tresor, a techno landmark.

“Station to Station” captures Coghlan’s eccentricity.  This a-side track is cerebral, complex and innovative; showcasing true artisan skill and passion.  Subtle intricacies within its composition, production and imaginative illustration warrant appreciation.

“5000 Miles” delivers a thick, raw and pulsating drive that demands attention from the first laid beat.  This no-nonsense, classic techno track is already gaining industry acclaim and, as an explosive introduction, sets the tone of (807) Recordings.
